L’Istituto Polacco di Roma e il Museo d’Arte Moderna di Varsavia presentano la mostra VEDO COSE CHE NON CI SONO a cura di Sebastian Cichocki e Ana Janevski (Museo d’Arte Moderna di Varsavia).
Il museo, in quanto strumento istituzionale, contribuisce sia alla creazione e fissazione di canoni storici sia al loro oblio. Gli oggetti artistici, insieme alle narrazioni che li accompagnano, investiti dai meccanismi di legittimazione del potere e del prestigio, tra allestimenti in sale espositive e depositi nei magazzini, trovano  il proprio posto all’interno o al di là della storia.
 

La mostra VEDO COSE CHE NON CI SONO è un breve racconto del museo di Varsavia, della sua creazione ancora in corso, attraverso opere prodotte dal museo e/o che fanno parte della collezione. Uno sguardo speciale nella mostra è rivolto difatti al bisogno “compulsivo” delle istituzioni artistiche di accumulare oggetti, partecipando, di consequenza, alla stesura e alla redazione sia della storia dell’arte che della storia in senso generale.
 

Le opere selezionate per questo progetto, mettono in questione le narrazioni storiche ufficialmente in vigore e la costruzione di biografie individuali. Gli artisti, utilizzando strategie manipolative, propongono il che cosa e il come debba essere ricordato, indipendentemente dal fatto che si tratti della retorica obbligatoria del “popolo eletto” (Uklanski) o di mitologie private (Bakowski, il cui lavoro – che per l’artista costituisce un “monumento” dedicato alla conversazione con un amico – dà il titolo all’intera mostra).
 

Il Museo d’Arte Moderna di Varsavia, una delle più giovani istituzioni artistiche in Europa (creata nel 2005), può vantare già un’intensa attività espositiva e produttiva, pur non avendo ancora una sua propria sede. Le opere prodotte si riferiscono principalmente al contesto locale e alle transformazioni politico-sociali degli ultimi vent’anni. La collezione contribuisce già alla riscrittura della storia dell’arte più recente, rispetto alla quale trovano un’appropriata collocazione, nel panorama internazionale, artisti dimenticati o misconosciuti dell’Europa Centrorientale.

L’apertura di VEDO COSE CHE NON CI SONO, presso l’Istituto Polacco di Roma, costituisce una prova di strategie istituzionali e, non a caso, coincide con l’apertura del MAXXI - Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI secolo. Allo stesso tempo si tratta di una “postilla” al dibattito internazionale sul futuro e sulla missione dei musei pubblici.

Con la mostra l’Istituto Polacco aderisce al progetto Accademie in Festa, promosso da ROMA - The Road to Contemporary Art e realizzato in collaborazione con Accademie e Istituti di Cultura stranieri presenti a Roma. Opening collettivo, martedì 25 maggio 2010 dalle ore 18:00 fino alle 21:00 con servizio navette di collegamento alle sedi.

The Polish Institute in Rome and the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw are proud to present the exhibition I SEE THINGS THAT ARE NOT THERE, curated by Sebastian Cichocki and Ana Janevski (Curators, Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw).

With the help of institutional structures such as museums we learn to remember and to fix historical canons, but we also improve in the art of oblivion. The objects as well as their accompanying narratives find a place inside or beyond history and are mixed with the help of defensive displays, rotation between the showroom and the warehouse, and the strength of involvement in mechanisms of legitimization of power and prestige.
The exhibition I SEE THINGS THAT ARE NOT THERE is a short story about museums and their compulsive and also capricious need of collecting objects - a feature that distinguishes these institutions as a building tool for writing and drawing on both history and art history.
 

The works in this show refer to the process of distortion of the most popular historical narratives of today and the methods of reporting individual biographies. The artists, who are aware of the strategies adopted in museums, make a manipulation of language and memory. In doing so, they anticipate what and how should be remembered, either in the case of the obligatory rhetoric of the "chosen people" (Uklanski) or in private mythologies (Bakowski, whose work - considered a monument dedicated to a conversation between the artist and a friend - gives the title to the entire show).

The exhibition mainly consists of works from the Museum’s collection. The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw is one of the youngest art institutions in Europe (established in 2005) which has already developed an intensive program of exhibitions, although it does not have its own permanent building yet. The Museum, among other activities, contributes actively to the production of new works referring to its local environment and political and social transformations taking part in rewriting the recent history of art, in which forgotten or misunderstood artists from Central and Eastern Europe find a place within the international art history canon.

The opening of the exhibition I SEE THINGS THAT ARE NOT THERE at the Polish Institute in Rome offers visitors a taste of high-level institutional strategies and, not surprisingly, it coincides with the Roman opening of MAXXI - National Museum of XXI Century Arts. At the same time this show is an "addendum" to the international debate on the future and mission of public museums.
 

With this exhibition, the Polish Institute in Rome joins Academies' Feast, promoted by ROME - The Road to Contemporary Art and realised in collaboration with foreign academies and cultural institutes in Rome. Collective opening: Tuesday 25 May, 6 pm to 9 pm. A bus service will connect all the venues involved in the initiative.
